 &lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span&gt;Input costs are climbing.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;span&gt; Manufacturer input prices have risen 37.5% in five years, and 46% of manufacturing leaders now rank rising wage costs as their number one challenge for 2026.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;Four scheduling methods come up most often in job shops: first-in first-out (FIFO), earliest due date (EDD), finite scheduling, and capability-based scheduling. Each solves a different part of the problem, and most shops end up combining more than one. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;h3&gt;First-in, First-out (FIFO) scheduling&lt;/h3&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;FIFO, first-in, first-out, also known as first-come-first-served, is one of the most basic scheduling rules. It's the same queuing rule used every day at retail and restaurants around the world: the first to arrive is first in line, and the first to get served.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;In a FIFO job shop, orders are queued by date received and the job that arrived first is processed first (the exception, of course, is when sales makes a special request).&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;This can be paired with visual FIFO lanes, physical hold space reserved for work-in-progress that limits how many jobs can queue between processes. Think taped floor lines, markings on a roller conveyor, or designated shelf space. Once a lane is full, upstream work pauses to avoid overproduction. It only starts again once jobs advance and space opens up.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;FIFO is the simplest scheduling rule to implement because it:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;ul&gt; 
 &lt;li&gt;&lt;span&gt;Reduces priority conflicts by avoiding jumping quick or "important" jobs to the front&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt; 
 &lt;li&gt;&lt;span&gt;Simplifies task management since operators always know which job is next&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt; 
 &lt;li&gt;&lt;span&gt;Prevents work-in-progress backlogs and bottlenecks&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt; 
&lt;/ul&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;But it has limitations. In a high-mix environment with lots of customisation, it doesn't optimise for due dates or setup times. A job with a fast turnaround gets stuck waiting its turn and could miss its due date through no fault of the shop, it's just the rules of the game. And similar jobs aren't grouped together, meaning you're switching back and forth between setups.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;h3&gt;Earliest Due Date (EDD) scheduling&lt;/h3&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;Earliest Due Date, also called Earliest Deadline First, uses one piece of information: the job's final due date. You schedule the job with the earliest due date for production first, so it's ready to go.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;Unlike first-in first-out scheduling, EDD is dynamic. The production queue changes as new orders come in to accommodate jobs with the closest deadlines. This method can be done using a spreadsheet and some basic filtering criteria, making it a popular choice for SME job shops and fabricators.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;The real benefit is that it improves on-time performance and reduces maximum lateness. In plain English, your late jobs will be less late. Instead of a job being 10 days overdue, it might only be 2 days behind.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;Smart Shop Floor uses a more advanced variant of this rule, called Earliest Operation Due Date (EODD). This version breaks jobs down into individual operations and calculates a separate due date for each step. This way, the scheduling software can:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;It's the difference between only knowing an order ships Friday, and understanding the full workflow with cutting starting Tuesday morning, welding beginning Wednesday afternoon, and powder coating happening Thursday, so each department has what it needs when it needs it.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;h3&gt;Finite scheduling&lt;/h3&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;Finite scheduling only plans work your shop can actually complete with the machines, time, people and materials you have available. It's the opposite of infinite scheduling, a common flaw in many production systems that assumes unlimited resources, which is why a carefully planned schedule can fall apart by lunchtime.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;Infinite scheduling is more commonly used by ERPs and generic scheduling tools because it's simpler to calculate and doesn't require on-floor touchpoints to capture real-time data. This can be sufficient for high-volume manufacturers with stable demand and repetitive production, but for a fabricator handling unique customer orders, infinite schedulers load work based generally on due dates and materials, which can create impossible workloads and unrealistic delivery promises.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;h2&gt;Why is Australian manufacturing losing skilled workers to retirement?&lt;/h2&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;In 2024, &lt;a href="https://misa.manufacturingalliance.org.au/books/fyau/#p=14"&gt;22% of the manufacturing workforce was aged 55 or older&lt;/a&gt;, and a significant portion of that group is expected to retire within the next decade. There isn't enough generational renewal coming through to replace them, and that imbalance is opening up a real knowledge gap across the industry.&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;The&lt;a href="https://manufacturingalliance.org.au/workforce-projects/"&gt; Manufacturing Industry Skills Alliance&lt;/a&gt; has been warning about this for several years now, calling it a "skills retirement cliff." If specialised skills aren't passed on to younger workers before that shortage hits, the industry risks diluting its knowledge base.&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;Small and medium manufacturers are the most exposed. Around 80% of them run with 20 staff or fewer, so losing one senior person with decades of experience can mean losing contracts, customers and knowledge that was never written down anywhere else.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;A buffer is a safety margin built in to protect your ability to deliver on time when something happens. And on a shop floor, it inevitably does: a machine goes down, a part turns up late, a job runs slower than planned, or work backs up waiting on a busy station.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;There are three ways to build in that protection: extra material, capacity or time. Time buffers are the least understood of the three, and the hardest for job shops to implement well.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;h2&gt;&lt;span&gt;Why are the old rules of thumb for safety buffers out of date for job shops?&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/h2&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;The standard advice for time safety buffers doesn't work for job shops or fabricators. It was designed for manufacturers with long runs, repeat parts and predictable flow.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;The Theory of Constraints (1990) originally recommended dividing average job lead time by five, then adding 20% extra time as protection against delays. A later recommendation was even higher: add 50% to manufacturing lead time.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;But this blanket approach creates problems. You don't want to just drag out your lead time by 50%.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;That creates too much work-in-progress sitting around slowing things down. Or having such a relaxed lead time lulls &lt;/span&gt;operators into thinking there's no rush, since the job isn't due for ages yet.&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;The concept has now evolved thanks to the &lt;a href="https://blog.smartshopfloor.com/smart-shop-floor/production-scheduling-for-job-shops"&gt;flexibility of automated scheduling&lt;/a&gt;. It's a precise operation to add and cut time in the right places.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

Statistics show the opposite: jobs can only accumulate delays over time. Each process follows a set order, and you can't jumpstart work by skipping ahead. As delays build up and priorities get reshuffled, more of your time goes into sorting out problems instead of running the shop.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;Think of it like the merge on Highway 1 into Perth. Three lanes merging into one. Traffic backs up, engines idle, frustrated drivers lay on the horn. This single open lane limits everyone on the road.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;With manual scheduling, too many new jobs get released and arrive at the bottleneck all at once. &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Manufacturing Labour Productivity:&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;a href="https://www.australianindustrygroup.com.au/news/blogs/2025/headwinds-batter-manufacturing-but-there-are-reasons-to-be-optimistic/"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;u&gt;&lt;span&gt;down 4% over the past 10 years&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/u&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;strong&gt;.&lt;/strong&gt; In plain terms, the same hour of work now produces less than it did a decade ago.&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Manufacturing Multifactor Productivity: down 1% over the past 10 years.&lt;/strong&gt; This measure also accounts for what's spent on equipment and technology, not just hours worked, so it's the clearer signal of whether new tools and smarter processes are actually paying off. Even by that measure, the industry is going backwards.&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;Over the same ten years, the rest of the Australian economy grew productivity by 5%.&lt;/p&gt;

It found the productivity gap between global frontier firms and the average Australian company had widened since the 2000s, because Australian firms have been slower to adopt cutting-edge technology and processes.&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;Growth rates in manufacturing were fairly similar between Australian companies and global frontier firms from 2009 onwards, likely due to competitive trade pressures, but the gap between the leaders and the rest of the pack was still wide. In practice, that means the average Australian manufacturer is significantly underperforming compared to the top firms in its industry.&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;The issue isn't a lack of technological progress. It's that new technology is too slow to spread from shop to shop, compared to other advanced economies.&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;h2&gt;Why do older, established companies fall behind on technology?&lt;/h2&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;The theory goes that new companies are more likely to adopt and invest in emerging technology, pushing them to become industry forerunners with higher productivity. More mature enterprises tend to drop behind, switching from offensive to defensive strategies and reducing their technology spend.&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;That's exactly what the Australian government found in its 2022 Reaching for the Stars working paper.&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;Manufacturing startups begin with a blank slate. They don't have existing capital they need to replace or pay off. They're open to new ideas. They're scrappy, hungry, innovative.&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;So whether you're a job shop or a fabricator, the older and larger your company gets, the more likely you are to fall into the incumbent trap: thinking your current momentum will keep you moving forward at the same clip.
